Pitot Tube Apparatus

Laboratory Procedure :

  1. Ensure that the power panel is at OFF position and all the drain valves are closed.
  2. Fill ¾ of sump tank with clean water and open the by-pass valve \(V_2\).
  3. Switch on the power supply to the experimental setup and the centrifugal pump.
  4. Open valve \(V_1\) and allow water to flow through test section by partially closing valve \(V_2\).
  5. The air release valve \(V_5\) present on the manometer should be slowly opened to release the air from it. This valve shall be closed when no more air is present in the manometer.
  6. Using the knob provided with the pitot tube, position it at the centre of the test section by adjusting its pointer to zero.
  7. The water flow rate shall be adjusted using the control valve \(V_1\) and the bypass valve \(V_2\).
  8. Record the manometer reading. In case pressure is above the scale in any tube, apply air pressure using hand pump to get a possible (readable) reading.
  9. Measure the discharge using measuring tank and the stop watch.
  10. Using the knob, change the position of the pitot tube and record the manometer reading for the discharge (calculated in Step 9). Repeat this for different positions of the pitot tube in order to obtain the velocity profile.
  11. Now, vary the flow rate through the use of control valve \(V_1\) and the bypass valve \(V_2\). And repeat step 7 to 10.
  12. Turn OFF the pump and power supply.
  13. Drain the apparatus using valve \(V_3\) and \(V_4\).

Simulation Procedure :

  1. Switch on the power supply by clicking on the power button.
  2. There are two modes coefficient of velocity and velocity profile, by default it is on coefficient of velocity. You can switch to velocity profile by clicking on it.
  3. As you power up, a slider will appear at the bottom which is meant for changing the flowrate.
  4. When you click on velocity profile you will see two arrows in the zoomed view of pitot tube test section. You need to click the arrows in order to change the pin height.
  5. Record the readings in both arms of the manometer by clicking on the "Save" button.
  6. Take the readings with different flow rates in case of calculating coefficient of velocity.
  7. In case of velocity profile you need to change the pin height and take the readings keeping the flowrate constant.
  8. Once done taking the readings click on the "show observation table" button to see the observation table.
  9. Click on export to excel button to export the observation table as excel file for further calcuations.
