Center of Pressure

Laboratory Procedure :

  1. Clean up the setup and make it dust free. On the base plate, set the acrylic tank.
  2. Use the level screw given at the bottom of the base plate to level the tank horizontally.
  3. On the top of the tank, put the left end of the balance arm into the stopper given.
  4. By placing the pivot given at the arm, on the slot provided at the top of the tank, set the quadrant with the balance arm at the tank.
  5. At the right end of the balance arm, add the counter weight. At the left end of the balance arm, hang the weight hanger in the slot provided.
  6. Adjust the counter weight position on the balance arm by observing the spirit level provided at the top of the quadrant to bring the quadrant assembly horizontal.
  7. Apply all the weights (10 x 50 gm) provided with the set up on the weight hanger.
  8. And fill the tank with water up to that condition when arm comes to horizontal position.
  9. Record the height of liquid level on balanced condition.
  10. Remove one weight from the weight hanger.
  11. Open the tank's \(V_1\) drain valve and allow the water to flow out of the tank before the arm returns to its horizontal position.
  12. Close the \(V_1\) valve and note the height of the tank's water level and the weight applied.
  13. Again remove one weight from the weight hanger and repeat step 11 and 12.

Simulation Procedure :

  1. Press the 'Add Water' button and drag the slider to change the water level.
  2. Tap on the '+' sign on the left to add weights.
  3. Make the arm horizontal, i.e. the blue dot is at the centre by adjusting water level.
  4. After the arm is horizontal, press the Save button to save the water level and weight.
  5. Now change the weight by using '+' or '-' sign.
  6. Again make the arm horizontal by adjusting the water level.
  7. Press the "save" button to save the readings.
  8. To access the Observation table, click on "show observation table".
  9. Click on "export to excel" button to export observation table as an excel file for further calculations.
